Warner Bros., TT Games, LEGO and Marvel have announced that a new LEGO Marvel Super Heroes game is in the works, to be released on PC, major consoles and handhelds around Fall 2013.

According to the press release, the game will feature over 100 unlockable Marvel characters and “[offer] an original storyline in which Nick Fury calls upon Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor, Spider-Man, Wolverine and other heroes spanning the Marvel Universe to save Earth from such threats as the vengeance of Loki and the hunger of Galactus, Devourer of the Worlds”.

Game Informer put together a  quick preview of the upcoming game:

Based on the success of previous LEGO games, this entry in the franchise is certainly not unexpected and will no doubt satisfy fans of the light-hearted video game franchise. Click below to for other LEGO games.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN

LEGO Spider-Man Minifigure

Spider-Man, aka Peter Parker, is a fictional super hero created by Stan Lee, Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby. Spider-Man first appeared in Marvel Comic’s Amazing Fantasy #15 and remains one of Marvel’s most popular and commercially successful characters.

An orphan raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben, a 15 year-old Peter Parker took on the Spider-Man moniker and a range of spider-like super powers after being bitten on the hand by a radioactive spider at a science exhibition.

Spider-Man and Peter Parker minifigures previously appeared in the 2002-2004 LEGO Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 themes which were based on the movies of the same title. This variant comes from the 2012 Marvel Super Heroes theme, and is based on Spider-Man’s appearance in the Ultimate Spider-Man (2012-) cartoon.

In terms of design, this variant is a bit of a mixed bag, despite being a reasonable representation of the cartoon version. The suit design on the front, imprinted over the standard muscular structure, is pretty cool. The head has a web print on the back which is nice. Also, the black spider logo and carefully shaped eye pads are spot on.

The use of negative space on the bottom corners of the front and back torso doesn’t work as the belt extends the full width of the torso, undermining the effect. Inherited from the cartoon, the logo on the back is a bit odd. A black outline around this logo might give it more depth and minimise the colour clash. He could also do with some red boots or knee markings to make the legs a little less blocky.

As with all the super hero characters, this figure is worth getting, simply because of the character he represents, if not for a fantastic design. I got my figure in Spider-Man’s Doc Ock Ambush but he is also available on the Bricklink for a reasonable price if you are not interested in the set.

LEGO Catwoman Minifigure (sh006)

A brief review of the new Catwoman minifigure (sh006) to compliment the more in-depth Batman II write-up, over there.

Catwoman and Batman II are brought together in the excessively titled Catwoman Catcycle City Chase 6858 set from the LEGO DC Super Heroes 2012 line-up.

The Good

Well…she’s the one-in-eighteen female minifigure which has to count for something…plus she’s the Catwoman…! Her black / purple / silver front and back prints lend the design an appropriately dark tone that suits her characters anti-hero edge.

The double printed head has well-defined, expressive details (alt. face) and unlike her set-mate, Catwoman is graced with a proper eye mask that looks good with and without the headgear.

The Not So Good

She should return Mr Jones’ brown whip for a refund or exchange, preferably in black, purple or shiny silver…and while she’s at it, she could pick up some slick footwear.

Phoenix, my slightly overweight feline friend rates this minifigure:
