JACK McHAMMER

LEGO Monster Fighters (2012) follows a band of monster fighters led by Dr Rodney Rathbone and a group of misunderstood evil monsters led by Lord Vampyre. Some of the characters and sets are similar to the LEGO Studios (2000) theme. Click for reviews, setsicon and more about the theme.

LEGO Monster Fighters Jack McHammerJack McHammer

Jack McHammer is a Scottish or ‘possibly’ Canadian lumberjack with a penchant for Hulk-style smashing with his trusty hammer. He has a steam-powered artificial arm which he uses to poke and generally annoy his arch-enemy, the Crazy Scientist’s Monster (aka Frankenstein).

Jack also comes with a knitted grey cap – popular among LEGO bank robbers, green plaid shirt under a leather vest, sand blue jeans with reinforced leather pockets and matching belt.

The head print on this guy is very cool. The two-tone beard, eyebrows and wrinkles add a lot of realism to his growly, determined expression. If you look very closely, his white pupils are also shaded, which may be a misprint as it varies across different figures, but nonetheless gives the eyes some nice depth.

The detail is continued on the legs with asymmetrical scratch marks on each kneepad and the stitching around the blue pockets. The front and back torso print lacks depth compared to the rest of the figure but is still pretty nice overall.

The all-round good design of this wee Scotsman is consistent with the other Monster Fighter figures although I found the sets themselves (aside from the completely awesome Vampyre Castle and Haunted House), a little disappointing.

You can pick up Jack McHammer in Vampyre Castle (9468)icon and The Zombies (9465)icon sets.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (2012-) is a licensed theme based on the heroes and villains from across the Marvel multiverse. The theme incorporates characters and stories from Marvel Entertainment’s cinema, television and comic book franchises. Click for reviews, sets and more about the theme.

LEGO Spider-Man Minifigure

Spider-Man, aka Peter Parker, is a fictional super hero created by Stan Lee, Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby. Spider-Man first appeared in Marvel Comic’s Amazing Fantasy #15 and remains one of Marvel’s most popular and commercially successful characters.

An orphan raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben, a 15 year-old Peter Parker took on the Spider-Man moniker and a range of spider-like super powers after being bitten on the hand by a radioactive spider at a science exhibition.

Spider-Man and Peter Parker minifigures previously appeared in the 2002-2004 LEGO Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 themes which were based on the movies of the same title. This variant comes from the 2012 Marvel Super Heroes theme, and is based on Spider-Man’s appearance in the Ultimate Spider-Man (2012-) cartoon.

In terms of design, this variant is a bit of a mixed bag, despite being a reasonable representation of the cartoon version. The suit design on the front, imprinted over the standard muscular structure, is pretty cool. The head has a web print on the back which is nice. Also, the black spider logo and carefully shaped eye pads are spot on.

The use of negative space on the bottom corners of the front and back torso doesn’t work as the belt extends the full width of the torso, undermining the effect. Inherited from the cartoon, the logo on the back is a bit odd. A black outline around this logo might give it more depth and minimise the colour clash. He could also do with some red boots or knee markings to make the legs a little less blocky.

As with all the super hero characters, this figure is worth getting, simply because of the character he represents, if not for a fantastic design. I got my figure in Spider-Man’s Doc Ock Ambush but he is also available on the Bricklink for a reasonable price if you are not interested in the set.

DARTH MALGUS

LEGO Star Wars (1999-) is a licensed theme based on characters, settings and stories from George Lucas’ fictional Star Wars universe. It was one of the LEGO Group’s first licensed themes and remains one of its most critically and commercially successful franchises. Check out reviewssetsicon, and more about the story.

Darth MalgusDarth Malgus

Darth Malgus (formerly Veradun), was a force-sensitive human male and Sith Lord active during the latter years of the Old Republic era, several thousand years before Star Wars: Episode 1. He is known for his exploits during the Great Galactic War, his time on the Dark Council and later, as a self-declared Sith emperor.

Malgus wields a red lightsaber and requires breathing apparatus due to battle damage inflicted by Jedi Master, Satele Shan. The character first appeared in BioWare’s MMORPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic.

This figure has all the trimmings of a fearsome foe, not least the battle armour from head to toe. The silver and black plating and rubberised armour extends down the torso and legs and is similar on the back, which means he still looks good even without the cape.

The one-piece neck / breastplate / breathing apparatus / shoulder element is a new mould and the coolest part of this figure, lending him a warrior look befitting a Sith Lord. The silver intake vents and red lights on the respirator add a subtle realism and overall, the design is pretty close to the virtual and non-LEGO models.

Other interesting details include the single-holed cape which is unique to this figure, and of course that unmistakable head print with piercing yellow eyes, wrinkled brow and battle-scarred face.

This is a must have figure for any fan of LEGO Star Wars and is well worth the set’s price-tag. He comes with the Sith Fury-class Interceptor set.

GREEN NINJA ZX

LEGO Ninjago (2011-2013) is a ninja theme that follows the adventures of four Spinjitzu ninjas, Cole, Kai, Zane and Jay and their foes including the Skeletons, the Serpentine and the evil Lord Garmadon, among others. Check out reviewssetsicon, and more about the story.

LEGO Ninjago Green Ninja Lloyd Garmadon MinifigureLloyd ZX

Lloyd Garmadon, aka the Green Ninja, is the son and arch-enemy of Lord Garmadon and wields all four elemental powers.

This ZX (Zen Extreme) variant is similar to the other ZX figures with a few minor differences, including pearl-dark-grey pauldrons and scabbard rather than silver or gold, a finely patterned silver crest rather than plain and a sash that extends around the back of the figure.

Other interesting details on this figure include the black-crossed silver diamonds printed on the torso and legs, the silver belt buckle and curled, golden snake emblem on the back.

The design of this figure matches pretty well with the other ZX figures and rivals Kai ZX in its level of detail. The layered robe is nice, as is the sash tie and belt buckle. My only gripes are that the sash is not printed on the waist line which looks a little odd and the dark-grey pauldrons don’t match the silver crest. Also, probably due to the printing process, the skin on the torso is a little green…but perhaps Lloyd was poorly that day.

Lloyd ZX is available in Epic Dragon Battle and the not so epic, Lloyd ZX Spinner Seticon.

Lloyd ZX (DK Exclusive)

Green Ninja ZX

On this figure the green robe is replaced with a black, green and gold Kimono, along with dark green arms, gold pauldrons and a gold crest. Interesting elements of the design are the gold and green tabs down the sides of the kimono, the little japanese symbols in the top left and right torso and a regal golden snake emblem in a green and gold circle on the back.

This Kimono’d Lloyd ZX has a more formal warrior look which is welcome, and the gold detailing is pretty spot on.

This variant comes with the LEGO Ninjago Character Encyclopedia, published by Dorling Kindersley.

JAY NRG

LEGO Ninjago (2011-2013) is a ninja theme that follows the adventures of four Spinjitzu ninjas, Cole, Kai, Zane and Jay and their foes including the Skeletons, the Serpentine and the evil Lord Garmadon, among others. Check out reviews, setsicon, and more about the story.

LEGO Ninjago Jay NRG Minifigure (Action)JAY NRG

Jay Walker is Ninjago’s resident Tesla Coil. In his NRG form Jay transforms into pure lightning and electric energy. NRG is the fifth Ninjago variant following on the success of Regular, DX, Kendo, and ZX editions.

Jay NRG is electric blue from head to toe with a good amount of holographic blue, pale yellow and dark blue outlines. As with the other NRG figures, the ZX hood makes an updated appearance.  The torso features Jay’s dragon emblem with forked lightning extending diagonally across the chest, hips and legs.

The holographic print looks awesome on this figure and several shades of blue give the lightning a bit of depth. The dragon emblem resembles Cthulhu and / or a tentacled brain…which is kind of cool, but perhaps unintentional. Jay’s lightning bolts are a bit thicker than Kai’s NRG flames, giving the design a more cartoony feel, which isn’t so bad. The back design is filled with more lightning bolts although a lack of yellow detailing on the bolts makes the back torso design slightly inconsistent with the front.

The face shows a reworked version of Jay’s standard scowl and scarred eyebrow. The lightning around the eyes make the face a little cluttered. No pupils and no outline around the eyes and eyebrows means the face print lacks the sharpness that Kai’s NRG print had.

I imagine that for play this figure is pretty cool but he does lack the careful attention to detail that those LEGO designers are known for. Hopefully Zane NRG (released later this year) will combine the best of Kai’s fine detailing with Jay’s reflectivity and outlining.

You can pick up Jay NRG on LEGO Shop at Home: The World’s Biggest LEGO Shop.
