Released in 1992, the Space Police II LEGO minifigures (sp038, sp037) followed the release of the Blacktron Future Generation (bad guys).
The theme was rebooted in 2009/10 with the introduction of the greatly expanded, Space Police III theme. Interestingly, the Space Police Chief (left) and Pilot (right) were the first space themed minifigures to include non-standard face designs.
These guys were rescued from my humble but cherished childhood LEGO collection, hence they are a little scruffy looking when viewed full size!
Pilot and Chief came with black helmets, green visors and black tanks. The Chief is distinguished by his red epaulette (?) and military insignia, no doubt earned after many years of service locking up evil Blacktron dudes! Both figures have identical face designs which include red hair, red eye-brows and black comm. equipment.
Both figures feature complex torso designs including lots of spacey detail, which distinguishes them nicely from their Earthly counterparts. The decision to print accessory details directly on the heads was quite unique. The small details are impressive on both these minifigures, particularly the ‘Space Police’ text and pseudo-3d shading on the Pilot’s bio-mech suit.
The Not So Good
Unfortunately, unlike his contemporary Commander Cold, the Chief doesn’t get shiny gold details to distinguish him from his subordinates. As their sets are predominantly black, green and grey, the torsos may have looked a little better in cool black.
